How often do you use a credit card when you make a purchase? Unless I miss my guess, you probably make frequent use of plastic to pay for your goods and services. It is a regular part of day-to-day life for most folks.

While some folks prefer to use cash because of the ease in controlling their expenses, most people choose the ease and convenience of credit cards – just one swipe and your done! Credit card users find this practice to be more convenient and much safer, since they don’t need a lot of cash on hand.

Personal Finance

I teach social studies. As a result, I often find myself teaching about economic issues, including things like personal finances. I find a lot of ignorance among my students on the topic. And I don’t just mean the macro-economic issues – there really is a dearth of knowledge on personal finance issues like loans, credit cards, and bankruptcy.

But to be honest, I guess I was the same way when I was young. I remember my first credit card. I ran that sucker up to the whole $500 limit, not realizing I couldnÂ’t carry the balance long term. I was fortunate to be able to turn to my folks for help. I learned some lessons through that experience.

If you need help wit your personal finances, CreditLoan.com can help. They have a host of personal finance articles that should help you determine what your needs are and how to proceed in your current situation.

1031 Exchange

Right now, everyone is thinking about taxes and tax-related issues. Some folks even have capital gains to consider as they make investment moves. But did you know that there is a way to take those capital gains and roll them into another asset at the same time, with the option of paying NO TAXES at all? It exists, and is called a 1031 Tax-Deferred Exchange. You can learn more about such transactions by checking the website of the 1031 Exchange Alliance.

Here’s how it works. Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code provides that no gain or loss shall be recognized on the exchange of property held for productive use in a trade or business, or for investment. Now what this means is that you have to make that capital gain and put that money back into a similar asset in such a way that you do not accrue an immediate cash profit to yourself. In effect, you are deferring taxes by making the exchange of the same sort of assets. So, for example, you could make tax-deferred exchange of one rental property for another, possibly by “buying up” into a better neighborhood or class of property, or by increasing the number of such holdings you have with the gain you made on the sale of the old asset. In effect, you increase your investment without needing to pay a large tax bill or plow in a lot of additional capital.

Made In The Shade

It sure does get hot here in Texas, as the sun beats down on Texas homes. One way of keep your house cooler is to keep light and heat out as the intensity of sunlight increases. One way to do that is with Window Blinds, shades, and other window coverings.

As we prepare for this summer, I'm thinking that maybe we need to get some of these these blackout Roman shades to help cool the house – especially since they are both stylish and affordable.

Wash Your Hair Naturally

One of the great things about free samples of products is that they make those samples are great to use when you travel. Unfortunately, we had to travel unexpectedly recently, and I was able to throw some samples into a bag to use on the trip. You know the sort of stuff – toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, deodorant and shampoo – the things that you need on a trip and don’t always find waiting for you by the sink at your hotel.

Well, one of the products I tossed in the suitcase was called Naked Naturals, a natural shampoo and conditioner that is good for your hair and the environment. What that means is that it contains natural ingredients rather than harsh chemicals. The samples I got in the mail were the Citrus and Keratin variety, which I found to be quite appealing in terms of scent and how the products worked. They left my hair clean and manageable, and – according to the claims on the product website – is 7 times more effective than a regular shampoo would have been in terms of hair flexibility and strength, as well as reducing breakage.

The other nice thing about this product is that it is all natural. Because of the lack of harsh chemicals, it does not over-lather or leave hair feeling brittle or stripped after washing and conditioning. Frankly, what more could you ask for in a product that is also good for the environment?

Clocks By Howard Miller

I have always been fascinated by clocks and the various ways people tell time. Maybe this fascination is related to my love of history (representing the past) and science fiction (representing the future) -- areas that are intimately connected with time

Of course, I've owned a great many clocks over the years. Most of them have been rather cheap, and not of high quality. But my favorite clock is the one given to by the school district to mark five years teaching there. It is a Howard Miller alarm clock, and each morning it wakes me for school. I simply love its beauty and reliability, and continue to be impressed by the quality. LetÂ’s be honest, IÂ’m surprised that the district gave us such great gifts. I plan on keeping for as long as it keeps running, which I expect to be a very long time. After all, this clock has turned out to be a very high quality one indeed.

When I got this gift, I had never heard of Howard Miller clocks My wife, though, had heard of them and was quite impressed. So was I, once she told me about them. I now know that Howard Miller clocks are among the best in the world – in particular their grandfather clocks. I hope that over the next few years, as we continue to work on our interior décor, that we will find the opportunity to include a few more Howard Miller clocks in our decorating scheme.

Be Oyster Aware!

Oysters! They provide us with a wonderful food and the beauty of pearls. What a glory we find in this creation of God – food and jewels in one humble, unremarkable creature. It is a thing of wonder.

Now imagine the possibility if the forces of creation had just tweaked the oyster a little bit more. What if, instead of pearls and the delicacy of the flesh of the oyster, we got other things when we cracked open the oysterÂ’s shell? Right now, I think an oyster that produced gasoline when irritated by a grain of sand would be quite useful. Imagine a sea bed full of genetically engineered oysters off the coast of the United States allowing the country to become energy independent! Well, it makes for a nice fantasy.

Unfortunately, there is something else that we can get from Gulf oysters – we can become ill from the bacteria that they carry if we are not careful. You need to be oyster aware when you eat oysters, especially those you gather yourself. Indeed, the consumption of undercooked oysters can result in a person becoming ill from the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria. At BeOysterAware.com, you can learn about the problems caused by Vibrio vulnificus and how to avoid the contamination. If you love oysters, check out this site to make sure that you remain healthy.

Discount Checks from VistaPrint

I really hate having to buy new checks. It seems that they are always so expensive, especially when you order from the company that the bank does business with. I much prefer trying to find discount checks, but often the companies you find in the newspaper are offering a one-time deal that then sees the cost of checks go much higher when it is time to reorder.

Of course, the result in my lifetime has been a wide variety of checks – ones with maps, ones with rodeo scenes, and even some with pictures of cute dogs on them, supporting charities that work with abused animals. What I do is try to find something that strikes me as fun.

VistaPrint is a wonderful company that offers a wide variety of products including postcards, magnets, address labels, stamps and check printing. You can even customize the products that you order in a large variety of ways, including different types and images. And if you order checks from them, you can receive TWENTY-FIVE FREE CHECKS by entering the coupon code BlogFreeChecks08.

VistaPrint has a huge selection of checks to choose from on their user-friendly site. You can easily personalize the checks to make them truly yours. Stop by and check them out when you are shopping for discount checks. You wonÂ’t be sorry.

Travel With Trusted Tours & Attractions

Interested in traveling to Boston? If you are, you really will want to check out Trusted Tours and Attractions. They have some of the best deals for traveling there, including a number of Boston tours that would suit most anyoneÂ’s idea of a vacation. Frankly, I wish I had known about them a few years ago when my wife and I made a trip there for a getaway weekend. We would have done more in a more coherent fashion than we accomplished in our time there, because there are lots of interesting things to do in Boston.

However, we did have a couple of amusing experiences while in the Boston area, though not in Boston proper. We decided to take a drive up the coast, through New Hampshire and into Maine. The amusing part about it was the drive back down a two-lane highway. As we entered Seabrook, New Hampshire, we began seeing signs pointing towards a nuclear power plant. Now normally that would not have been something to attract our attention, except for the fact that we had recently moved into our house in Seabrook, Texas. We managed to get a picture of ourselves taken for that yearÂ’s Christmas card, standing in front of a sign reading SEABROOK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. Yeah, we have a weird sense of humor.

The other bit of fun was seeking out Ken’s Steakhouse for dinner our last night in Boston. A 30 mile drive for steak – just because my wife likes their salad dressing! But still, it made for a neat anniversary dinner.

The folks at Trusted Tours and Attractions don’t just do Boston – they can help you see the best sites in many cities. For example, they can arrange for you to have a trip to one of my favorite childhood haunts, the San Diego zoo, or the many wonderful sites in Washington, DC. They have lot’s of great family vacation ideas!

By the way, they are running a contest right now. When you sign up for the Trusted Travel eNewsletter, you are automatically entered to win iPod Nano. So what are you waiting for? Get on over there and sign up for the newsletter and the great prize!

About Mortgages

I've been in my house for almost seven years now. I have to confess, I didnÂ’t know much about Mortgages. To be honest, they were something of a foreign concept to me given that my family lived in military housing for so many years. Still, I got a decent rate and was wise enough to avoid the adjustable rate trap that is leading to the high rate of foreclosures now. But you don't have to rely on luck in finding a good mortgage deal -- there are sources of information to help you make the best decision for your situation. Take Money Magic, for example. They specialize in all types of loans and work to provide their clients with both the lowest interest rates and top-notch mortgage advice. And the best thing about Money Magic is that it is all free.

Birthday Cards

Being successful in business requires that you build and maintain relations with your clients and suppliers. It doesn’t matter what business you are in – insurance, real estate, or the sale of metal tubing – you need to make sure that those with whom you do business know that you are striving to build and maintain a relationship with them. And that is where you find yourself needing to buy and send personalized corporate greeting cards.

There are, of course, multiple occasions for sending out such greeting cards. After all, certain holidays have greeting card customs associated with them – Christmas being the most obvious example. However, birthday cards are also important because it tells the recipient that you have taken the time to learn about them as an individual and to not the special event. And by selecting an appropriate card, personalized with your business information, you associate the sense of good will with your business.

Personally, I’m fond of this card. You may ask why this one speaks out to me. Simple – who can resist a smile when one sees balloons? I personally find it tacky to send cards with gifts pictured on them unless you are sending a package along – but the balloons communicate the joy of birthdays past, especially from our childhood years.

Seiko Watches

I love watches. I always have, especially since I was a kid and my father came home from a WestPac cruise in the late 1960s with a beautiful Seiko Watch that was not even available in the United States. IÂ’ve always wanted to get such a watch for myself, one that shows high quality and which reflects my own personality and sense of style. ThatÂ’s why I like this wonderful Seiko Titanium Chronograph. It looks beautiful and is finely crafted by the watchmakers at Seiko. And the alarm function, while not something I would use every day, is certainly a convenience worth having. Maybe I should start dropping Christmas hints!

Dymo LabelWriter

Some years ago, my wife wanted a small, hand-held label printer for use in her craft projects and in organizing all her materials for those projects. After doing a lot of shopping around, we bought a just such a personal label maker for her, and have been really happy with it. But while it is a great product for around the house, it certainly isnÂ’t the sort of thing you would use on a daily basis in an office or on a shop floor. Fortunately, however, Dymo offers a variety of business label printers.

Take, for example, the Dymo LabelWriter line that is designed for business use. Each of these printers has a number of great features, allowing you to print different types and sizes of labels needed for your business. Indeed, the printing speed is fantastic – for example, the LabelWriter 400 Turbo has the capacity to spit out 55 labels in a minute – nearly one a second. That is just plain amazing! And not only that, you can print a href="http://global.dymo.com/enUS/Home/default.html">online stamps on the LabelWriters using the No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps™ postage labels that are made for these printers. That saves you from having to deal with stamps – just print your own postage from a USB printer hooked to your computer!

Internships

“Experience preferred.”

I remember those words in ads when I began my first job search years ago, fresh out of college. But let’s be honest – I didn’t have any experience, and I didn’t see how I could have gotten any while working on my degree. After all, that degree was supposed to be the key to getting that first job and acquiring that experience – right?

What I didn’t realize was that there had been opportunities during my college career to apply for internships in my chosen field and thereby get some of that much-desired work experience. I would have been much more marketable if I had. And if you fast forward two decades into today’s world, you will find that the same dynamic is at work – and that internships are even more important for students who are graduating and seeking that first job.

The Internship Institute is a program devoted to helping students with the College Recruiting and post-collegiate employment experience by making internships more readily available and more standardized in terms of their content. And since such internships are becoming a graduation requirement at more and more colleges, they are proposing that one half of the tuition paid by college students for their internships be set aside to create internship readiness centers, thereby closing the gap between school and work. Check out the proposal at their website, located at http://www.internshipinstitute.org/.

Find A Restaurant

I love a good restaurant. After all, a dining establishment is more than just the food (although it is the primary thing). It is also about the atmosphere set by the facility, the tone set by the staff, and the general sense of welcome that comes with the place. But when you are in a strange place, it can be hard to know where to go for a good meal or a night out on the town. After all, you arenÂ’t on your turf. That is where th internet can be of assistance.

Take, for example, this site that I recently ran across. It does a great job of mixing the efficiency of the internet with the human need to find enjoyable sustenance. For example, at the Restaurant Calgary site I found a large listing of restaurants that are conveniently situated on the siteÂ’s the digital map. Using that map, you can easy to find where a particular restaurant is located.

Similarly, on the Restaurant Vancouver site you can locate any number of fine dining establishments by use of the digital map. All you have to do is determine the type of cuisine, the style of dining, and the part of town where you will be dining and you can find exactly the sort of restaurant you want. So, for example, the next time I visit my folks and we make a day trip up to Vancouver, we can just hit the internet and find an Italian restaurant with reasonable prices and a spectacular view. You know – things that out-of-towners don’t usually know about but that can be key to making a fine dining experience.

You get the same sort of convenience at the Restaurant Toronto site. Just choose which the relevant categories, part of town, and amenities to narrow the search. Once you find that special restaurant, then you can find the details of the restaurantÂ’s location so you can get there conveniently.

CraigsList Ad Software

One of the best ways to promote your business or product online is to have it posted or listed on classifieds on the internet. There are various ways of doing this effectively, but one thing example that has taken off in recent years is CraigsList. The problem is that it can take time to post your ads, especially for multiple cities. However, there are sites out there that offer software applications to let you do auto-posting. Such craigslist software is really time-saving and beneficial. Not only do you eliminate some of the time and effort of making those individual posts, you also avoid the frustration that goes with it. Why choose the manual route if the craigslist posting software application would help you post some 600 unique advertisements in the time it woulde ordinarily take to post a fraction of that number? So if you use CraigsList, try this software for craigslist and see what sort of results you get.

Do you take photographs with a digital camera? If you do, I'm sure that you have some that you want to keep away from the prying eyes of others. But how do you keep a photo safe from unauthorized viewing or use? Simple – you need photo encryption to lock these digital photos away safely. You can lock your pictures away in a digital photo album that only authorized users can access. Fortunately, there are such programs available to let you keep these photos private. Just download the program and install it after paying the low fee of $29.95 and you will have the security you want and need for the pictures you have taken.

Insurance

I've been very fortunate in my life when it comes to different types of insurance. I've actually been with one company my entire life for car insurance and homeowners insurance, from the day I first got my drivers license on forward, to the day I rented my first apartment and beyond to when I purchased the house where I live.

I do, of course, comparison shop for insurance, even though IÂ’ve been content with my insurance company -- every year I compare auto insurance rates to find out if I am really getting the best available deal, as well as for the insurance on my house. That can be a time-consuming task, though, checking with different companies to determine what the best available rates are and then comparing the different bells and whistles of each.

Over at Autonetinsurance.co.uk, you can find some really great deals on all types of insurance. This includes Business Insurance of all types. As I compared what they had to offer, I was surprised to see how low the rates could be. So if you are located in the UK, why donÂ’t you drop by their site and see if they can save you some money on the insurance that you need. After all, what have you got to lose except the higher price you are paying now?

Movie Database Software

Do you own a lot of movies? One of my buddies has several hundred DVDs that he keeps in a nice rack, but he really needed movie organizer software to keep track of what he owned. Fortunately, he found such a program with a great movie database that even let him download movies at home. You can find out more about it at Allmymovies.com.
