Credit Card Offers

Like most folks, I havecredit cards -- they are the avenue to so much information about us, and can be both a source of financial opportunity and financial danger. I mean, one need only consider the recent breaches at so many retailers and banks to recognize just how much of your personal information is out there in your credit card records. Such information in the wrong hands can ruin you. On the other hand, responsible credit card issuers will monitor your card's activities and make contact to stop fraud in its tracks. One of mine did that during our hurricane evacuation. So it does seem that the companies are out to protect our interests when they coincide with their interests.

However, there are benefits to credit cards, in terms of finding an offer that will save you money by allowing 0% balance transfers or 0% credit cards. Shop around for the best offers -- that is just a part of being a wise consumer.

Loans

Seeking out credit and loans are a part of our society. The average person simply can't make some purchases, like a car or a house, without borrowing money. When faced with such purchases, secured loans are usually the only realistic option out there, with the lender having a lien on your house or car. In a sense, the lender is the real owner of at least some portion of the property until you have fulfilled your end of the bargain, right?

Secured loans, though, are not the only sort of personal loans you might need. You can get an unsecured loan in many instances -- especially as we look at credit card debt. Too many folks find themselves taking out a loan to consolidate debt so that they can lower payments and interest rates, as well as extending the time one has to pay off the debt. This can be a great help, provided one does not run up additional debt. There is even the possibility of a bad credit loan being available for those who have already gone to far down the road of debt, to help them repair their credit rating.

Borrow only when you have to, and only to the degree that you can afford to pay back. Otherwise you face bankruptcy -- with all the credit and personal implications that implies.

Person.com

If you are looking for a site where you can meet new folks, then you can find it all at Person.com - webcams, chat, personals. It is a new social networking site where you can make new friends and meet new dating partners, whatever you want. And part of the fun is that many members run their webcams live, so you can engage in live video chat (clean, please) with a real person!

Is it a site that I would spend a lot of time at? Maybe not, being that I'm a happily married guy in my 40s. But I would have loved something like this about 15-20 years ago, before I met my darling wife -- and think it is a great way for meeting new folks in town and around the world. Especially female folks. I would certainly have been one of the online flirts. I mean, it is an impressive social networking site.

If that sounds like it is up your alley, or if you are one of those female folks I mentioned, check it out.

Orlando

It has been years since I have been to Orlando, but I'd love to go back. After all, it is home to the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World. I mean, my darling wife and I could stay in one of the many Disney Vacation Homes in the area and visit Epcot or Disney-MGM Studios -- or whatever the latest Disney News says is the hot new attraction. We could also go to Universal Studios Florida, or to one of the other attractions in the area.

But to be honest, I'd just like a quiet getaway with my beloved, relaxing and enjoying each other's company -- with maybe a balloon ride thrown in for good measure! And being from Houston, we could also head over to Kennedy Space Center -- sort of as a bookend to our trip back home, just down the road from Johnson Space Center. But regardless, it would be a great getaway for the two of us.

IDrive-E

About a year ago, I lost it all. Everything. Not a byte of data could be recovered following that hard drive crash. There was no way to access a single bit of it, no matter how hard I tried -- and none of it had been backed up, despite my best intentions. Indeed, I had just bought an external hard drive to do precisely that when everything went away.

I wish I had known about IDrive-E, found at IDrive.com. They have a phenomenal deal there on Online Backup services -- 2 Gigabytes free, $4.95 a month for unlimited online storage. Good grief, if only I had known and availed myself of the service. I wouldn't have lost all of my materials for my college course, or my wife's extensive collection of graphics that she uses for her crafting projects. Indeed, i still regularly get asked if I've backed up her stuff -- because she has a fear of losing so many graphics that she had spent years collecting.

And I'll be honest -- there was very little that my wife and I couldn't do without. Imagine if you were running a business, and lost everything. Say goodbye to your accounts receivable spreadsheets, your other financial records, and your crucial correspondence that you've been keeping an eye on. Imagine the lost good will with customers as orders went unfilled and leads went unanswered. It would be enough to put the small businessman out of business -- or worse. So seriously, you have got to take a look at getting some Online Backup now.

Loans

Debt is a two-edged sword. It can allow you to acquire things you want or need, but it can also strangle you economically if you are not careful.

I look at the situation some friends found themselves in a few years ago. They were a nice couple -- he in his 50s and her in her 40s, with two wonderful kids. the problem was that they had allowed themselves to live a lifestyle that was well beyond their means. I mean they were in serious trouble. The had lots of unsecured and secured loans -- everything from student loans to car loans to credit cards to a mortgage. And then he lost his job, and they nearly lost it all. Fortunately, a new job for my friend and the use of Secured Home Loans to lower monthly payments and tap into their equity in their house allowed them to recover and live a more scaled-back life by use of this Secured Loan.

If you are facing financial need and you are looking for Secured Loans UK, might I suggest AdvanceStart.com?

This Could Be Fun

I know many of us have bid in online auctions. I got my camera that way, and a few other odds and ends. You have to be the high bidder in such situations, though, and so you may end up in a bidding war for that special something you want.

But what if you could be the LOW bidder and win? Or at least the person with the low UNIQUE bid?

Well you can be over at bid4prizes!

here's how it works. Once you register, you text your bid to a designated number using your cellular phone. They will text back if your bid is low, high, or a duplicate. Or you can bid online. Keep on bidding until you believe you have beat everyone else -- and PAY ONLY THE DELIVERY CHARGES AND TAXES OWED THE IRS! Otherwise, that item is free to you.

Think about the fun you could have right now bidding on that 2007 Scion, Samsung 50" Plasma TV, or other great prizes currently up for bid. Compete for that item that has caught your eye -- and maybe end up with it coming to your home for next to nothing! Sounds great to me.

Asheville Homes

Back during the Great Teaching Job Hunt of 1997 (when I sent resumes to over 500 school districts around the United States), one of the areas where I concentrated my search was North Carolina. During that time, I became quite familiar with Asheville, because there were a number of openings in districts in that area. And since my wife and I had spent our honeymoon in the Smokey Mountains, this location was particularly attractive.

But it was more than that. The Asheville area was already growing, and seemed to be a dynamic place with lots of entertainment, recreation, and dining opportunities for a "relatively) young couple looking for a place to become an older, retired couple in 30 or so years. After all, there is a lot to do there -- but it still retains that small city charm that so many parts of the South have always had. In some ways, I remain disappointed I didn't end up teaching down there.

One other nice feature was the availability of homes at a reasonable price. And I mean area new homes, Asheville existing homes, and condos and apartments galore. It was, and appears to remain, a good place to find a place to settle down in for life.

So take a look around – Asheville might just be calling you home.

What I'd Do With My Summer Loan

I'd keep a promise, that's what I'd do with my loan .

You see, early in our marriage, I promised my darling wife an Alaska cruise. She's always wanted to go, but finances have never made it possible. Between the expenses that were associated with our early married life, debt from our move to Texas, the first couple years in our new house, and her health issues, there simply has never been enough cash for me to do what she's always wanted -- take the Inside Passage to Glacier Bay.

Now there are lots of loans out there for you to consider -- whether you are after a personal loan or a secured loan. And while this year might not be the year for us to go, maybe next summer will be.

Arizona Realtors

About a decade ago, I was doing my last big job hunt, trying to find a teaching job I could be happy with. I ended up in Houston, but would have been really happy to end up in the very hospitable community of Scottsdale, where I interviewed for a position that almost sounded too good to be true. Heck, let's be honest --I can't imagine many places in the county better that Scottsdale to try to sell houses. I bet they just sell themselves, given the natural beauty and vibrant growth in the area.

More About Eric Schiffer

Not long ago I told you about actor Eric Schiffer, who appears to be a real Renaissance man. Well, I've got some more news about the guy, just for you.

You may recall me mentioning a possible upcoming movie role for Eric Schiffer in a "buddy flick". Well, there is more news on that front. I can tell you that discussion continues on that front, but we now know that one of the other actors to be featured in the film is none other than TK Carter, who you may remember from Dr. Detroit, Domino, and Showtime's "The Corner". There is also an A-list star set to come on board the project, but that name has yet to be released for public consumption.

And that remake of the old Charles Bronson vehicle, currently tagged with the working title of Death Wish Returns, is a definite go, with shooting scheduled to begin in December 2007 in Glasgow, and a tentative release date at the height of the summer movie season in 2008.

So anyway, it appears that there is a lot on Eric Schiffer's plate in the near to middle term. If I hear more, I'll be sure to let you know.

More Jean-Claude!

So, let's go back to an earlier topic -- Jean-Claude, the backgammon king of the feline world! This wild and crazy guy is at it again in the second episode of his adventures over at BackgammonMasters.com -- which is well on its way to becoming the world's number one online backgammon site!

Now as you may remember from my earlier discussion, Jean-Claude is a backgammon playing fool. Well, maybe fool isn't the right word, because he is really a backgammon king -- and with apologies to his cousin Leo, might I suggest he is the backgammon king of the jungle?

Anyway, this master predator is a real strategist, as well as a student of history. In his latest lesson for we would-be online backgammon legends, Jean-Claude turns military historian on us, pointing us back to World War II and the famous Operation Barbarossa -- when Hitler attacked Russia and Stalin's forces drew the Nazi Wehrmacht into a battle against superior numbers and the weather in Russia's heartland (similar to what happened to napoleon some thirteen decades earlier.

Well as I was saying, Jean-Claude humorously draws comparisons between the game of backgammon and the strategy of both sides during this critical phase of the Eastern Front of the Second World War in Europe. In doing so, he shows how backgammon is a game of strategy -- a game of war -- and that the lessons of combat are applicable to the smaller sphere of gaming. An important lesson to learn if you are to be a backgammon champion -- success is based upon long-term thinking and not over-extending one's resources.

And to use an old advertising slogan -- put a tiger in your tank. And in Jean-Claude's case, make it a Panzer tank.

Buying A Home

What can I say about the home buying experience. I've been through it twice -- once when we withdrew from the deal because of our dissatisfaction with the builder, and once where the sale was consummated.

The first purchase was one that we tried to make on our own. We went to a builder in a subdivision in our area -- one that made his position clear that he did not want to deal with a real estate agent. indeed, he informed us that the price of the house would be 7% higher if we went through an agent, because he would not surrender one cent of profit. That should have been the signal to run -- but it was later, after having the wrong brick put on our house, the wrong tub installed in our master bath, carpet laid down over a soup-bowl size hole in the concrete and another problem too gross to mention, we refused to go through with the deal. I suspect an agent could have gotten us out sooner -- or solved the problems for us.

Our second go at buying a house came a few years later. We found an agent with a local big name company. She found houses for us quickly, made arrangements for us to see them, and helped us put in offers for three of them. One sold for more than we offered (and more than the house was listed for), one went to an identical offer, and the third became our home. On this house she negotiated her way through the obstacles placed by the seller's agent -- who wanted closing in 72 hours so it would count as an April sale -- to get us a house that we really do love.

I'd have to say that going with a reputable agent was the best decision we could have made the second time around. I'd urge you to do the same. And if you are in the market for Atlanta Area Real Estate, check out Mark Teytel and Lena Zaretsky at Realty1st.

Romance!

Romance seems to have gone out of our society today. I think it is tragic.. All too often, the dating scene is about "hooking up" and getting physical. That strikes me as a tragedy -- for individuals and for society as a whole.

I look at my students, tenth graders on the cusp of adulthood. When i mention romance, they don't understand the concept. Perhaps the closest I can get some of the boys is when I suggest to them that the girl they are with is much too good for them, and they need to start treating them that way. Some of them get the point -- and the girls who hear me say that buy into that concept, because they really do want to be treated like a lady, not just a one night stand.

Of course, it usually isn't until later in life that one comes to realize that the dating scene is supposed to be about finding Mr. or Ms. Right, not Mr. or Ms. Right Now. And even once you find that perfect mate, a relationship must be nurtured with a dash of romance every now and then.

Me, I like to leave little love notes for my wife. Some days the screensaver will be a romantic message. Other days she will find a note in the fridge or freezer, or even hidden in a pill bottle when I know her back is particularly bothering her. Perhaps the hardest to pull off was the note left taped around the dog's collar.

One of my ways of keeping romance alive involves a little bit of physical labor on my part, just so she knows I care. Even though my wife's wheel chair has an electric motor, when we go out together I usually don't install the batteries. If I cannot walk through the store holding her hand or go into a restaurant with her on my arm, at least I can provide that loving touch and support by being her source of horsepower. You see, anything can be romantic if you desire to make it so -- because there is Romance for Everyone if you wish to create it.

Educational Tours

As a history teacher, I get all sorts of brochures and fliers from companies that sell educational trips. I've often thought that I might like to sponsor one with my students, but I've been wary of doing so. After all, at least once a year I hear some horror story about a trip gone bad. That's why it is important to go with a company that is established and reputable.

Hemisphere Educational Travel has been in the business of arranging student travel for nearly four decades. Rehab

One of my former students just got back from rehab this week. She had started to do a few pills, and quickly moved on to what I will politely call "more than a few" pills a day -- to the point that she eventually found herself unable to function on a day-to-day basis. She needed help, and she needed it bad.

Fortunately, her parents found a drug detox and rehab programs for teens through the use of the internet. And that is where www.4rehabilitation.com comes into the picture. They provide a referral service for drug detox and rehab programs of all kinds so that you can find the proper program for you or your loved one.

It is my deepest hope that you never need to use such a service, but if you do I encourage you to contact www.4rehabilitation.com

Is A Jewish Dating Service Cool?

What about a Christian one? Or one devoted to members of a particular ethnic group? I mean after all, we all look (or looked) for certain traits and characteristics in a mate that were important to us? Aren't religion and ethnicity important?

Personally, I think they are. After all, one's religious faith is often very important to one's sense of self, and compatibility. Why shouldn't there be a dating service that helps one "screen out" those who don't share that very important characteristic? Now I'm not talking about some sort of discriminatory program based upon superiority -- simply assistance in finding someone who is compatible.

So take my question about a Jewish dating service? offering classifications based upon such important issues as religious values and ethnic heritage is a very positive thing in my book. After all, these commonalities can be the very glue that hold a relationship together. It is certainly better than the old "looking for a red-head who likes cogs and long walks on the beach, doesn't it? It is likely that a shared set of beliefs is a much stronger cement than "what's your sign, baby", isn't it?

That is why so dating services have gotten much more scientific in their services for matching folks up. We see in-depth surveys about attitudes and backgrounds designed to help make matches more precise. And if such services operate in a manner that are non-discriminatory, I think the specialization is all for the good.

It Sucks When You Buy A Lemon!

Yeah, it really does suck to get a defective car, loaded with problems that cannot be fixed. Maybe it is a design problem, a manufacturing defect, or some other problem -- but some cars are simply snake-bit from the day you drive them off the lot. Fortunately, in most states there are laws to protect you in such a situation.

But one of the things you usually need in such situations is a layer, just to get the dealer's attention. The Burdge Law Office is a law firm that can help you deal with that lemon car and protect your legal rights to a remedy under the laws of your state. And not only that -- if you are not from Ohio, they can refer you to lawyers in your own area of the country that specialize in dealing with those evil lemons!

Cruises

My wife really wants to go on a cruise -- an Alaskan cruise, if you want to be specific. It may not happen for a while, but I am committed to taking her on one eventually.

Now there are a lot of great sites out there for searching for cruises. Among those is the one found at www.directlinecruises.com, where you can find cruises on all the major cruise lines. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises & Celebrity Cruise Line are all available for your consideration. And best of all, some of the cruises available are leaving from popular East Coast ports in New York, Boston, New Jersey & Pennsylvania, so it is not necessary to travel long distances before the cruising begins! Prices are great, too!

Echo Malibu

Drug abuse happens in our society, all too often. So does alcoholism. And as a teacher, I can tell you that they happen among my students. Not long ago, in fact, one of my students had to enter rehab because her drinking had gotten so out of control that she was smuggling alcohol into class in a bottle of apple juice -- she could not make it through the day without drinking!

Where do you turn when you need to seek help for a young person in need of rehab? Well, there are many fine adolescent drug treatment facilities out there -- including Echo Malibu, located on the California coast in Malibu. The program is one based upon Empowerment, Choices, Hope and Opportunity, and is designed to teach these young people to make better choices in life.
