War On Terrorism An Over-Reaction To 9/11

This column goes to prove that some folks may have book smarts but no common sense -- or moral compass. Professor David Bell effectively argues that the terrorists didn't kill enough Americans on 9/11 to justify our response.

IMAGINE THAT on 9/11, six hours after the assault on the twin towers and the Pentagon, terrorists had carried out a second wave of attacks on the United States, taking an additional 3,000 lives. Imagine that six hours after that, there had been yet another wave. Now imagine that the attacks had continued, every six hours, for another four years, until nearly 20 million Americans were dead. This is roughly what the Soviet Union suffered during World War II, and contemplating these numbers may help put in perspective what the United States has so far experienced during the war against terrorism.

It also raises several questions. Has the American reaction to the attacks in fact been a massive overreaction? Is the widespread belief that 9/11 plunged us into one of the deadliest struggles of our time simply wrong? If we did overreact, why did we do so? Does history provide any insight?

Certainly, if we look at nothing but our enemies' objectives, it is hard to see any indication of an overreaction. The people who attacked us in 2001 are indeed hate-filled fanatics who would like nothing better than to destroy this country. But desire is not the same thing as capacity, and although Islamist extremists can certainly do huge amounts of harm around the world, it is quite different to suggest that they can threaten the existence of the United States.

Yet a great many Americans, particularly on the right, have failed to make this distinction. For them, the "Islamo-fascist" enemy has inherited not just Adolf Hitler's implacable hatreds but his capacity to destroy. The conservative author Norman Podhoretz has gone so far as to say that we are fighting World War IV (No. III being the Cold War).

I'm utterly speechless that an educated many would write this, or that an American publication would print this.

But then again, Bell is a college professor.

And the newspaper is the LA Times.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at all.

1 Interesting that he would mention the Russians. Because the Russians lost 20 million because they didn't care about who got killed.

These people seem to love russian philosophy. Like "there is a quality to quantity all on its own". Or Stalin's infamous phrasing that one death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. A statistic to be used to massage certain events that is.

2 The Germans sent railroad cars full of jews to the gas chambers every so many minutes. They killed 6,000,000 of them. I think the Japanese that were interred here in America were also over reacting to being placed in camps. I wonder if that pointy headed professor would agree with that? Or would that just be another opportunity to blame America for all the ills of the world? I think we all know the answer to that.

There's a line in the movie, City Slickers II, near the end where the guys have found the "fake gold" in the cavern, duked it out with the pretend bad guys and then the trail boss/owner of the fake mine comes in and explains about the fake map for tourists and realizes that these guys thought it was real.

How's that for setting up what I wanted to say about Professor Bell's assessment of our involvement in the war on terror, often times misnamed the war in

5 I totally agree with this bloke- you Americans are so caught up in propaganda that you can't seem to take a step back and look at what a mess the war in Iraq is. Where are the weapons of mass destruction? Where are the millions of terrorists you ignorant people seem to think there are. The truth is that 9/11 was a one off by a bunch of nutters using their religion as an excuse, and the American government has just used this attack as justification to invade Iraq- and eventualy Iran and Pakistan and all the other nearby countries- and take control of all their precious oil reserves. You can preach all you want, but frankly I'm glad that not all Americans eat up all the crap their government tells them.
