This Won't Help Her Case

Proof that Britney Spears probably shouldn't be allowed ANY visitation with her kids.

A child custody standoff between Britney Spears and employees of ex-husband Kevin Federline lasted three hours and ended with an intoxicated Spears releasing the children before she was carted away in an ambulance. home Thursday night.
Foxnews.com have confirmed that the Los Angeles Police Department was called to Spears' home to investigate a "custody dispute" around 8 p.m. Pacific Time.
Federline's bodyguards intended to collect their two toddlers at 7p.m. but Britney reportedly refused to hand them back.
Officers were called to the home around 8 p.m., and the 26-year-old singer turned over the children around 10:50 p.m., Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman, told City News Service.
At around midnight Britney was wheeled out in a gurney, following hearsays that "someone" inside the home was in a very hysterical, possibly intoxicated state. Police officer Jason Lee told the Associated Press that no injuries were reported yet Spears was believed to be under a the influence of an "unknown substance". The mother-of-two has since been placed on "medical hold" in an unknown location and is awaiting medical evaluation.

Let's see what we have here.

Interference with child custody arrangements.

A stand-off with police.

Emergency detox/mental health treatment.

Can anyone really argue that this woman is not a danger to those kids? Is there any basis for suggesting that they are safe in her custody? Heck, one has to ask whether Spears is not a danger to herself or others and in need of longer-term commitment for her obvious psychological problem

Closing question -- am I the only person shocked to conclude that Kevin Federline is really the better parent out of this pair?

1 Your lack of sympathy for someone who is clearly in a great deal of personal trouble is troubling. Britney has been used as a productive milch cow for so many years by her mother, her management and the popular press that it is little wonder that her life has descended into madness. It is telling that they all jumped ship when it was clear that 'Camp Brit' was no longer stable. Possibly she does need sectioning. Almost certainly at this moment in time she is an unfit mother. But I saw the pictures of her going to court several hours before her flip out and she looked exhausted. More than exhausted, she looked defeated. Ask ourselves why. She clearly loves her children. She is clearly in emotional distress. She has no one person she can trust in any meaningful way. Her life is a bubble of flash photography and criticism. Yes, K-Fed is clearly the better parent at present. However that isn't the full story by a long shot. She clearly needs help for dependency issues and probably mental health issues. This does not make her a bad person, just like the millions of other people worldwide who suffer from these very same issues (I'm from the UK). All to often mental health issues are ridiculed and misunderstood by people who have never had to confront them in their own lives. As the daughter of an alcoholic father and a clinically depressed mother I have thankfully escaped both illnesses, but I would have bitterly resented being deprived contact with either parent as a child. Yes, I saw things that I probably would have preferred not to. As an adult I can honestly say that I believe this makes me stronger and more compassionate towards people in difficulty. Perhaps in others eyes this makes me weaker! I don't know and don't particularly care. Give her a break. Hope she gets the right care now that this has happened. My father had to be clinically dead and resusitated before he could give up the bottle. Twenty sober years later he is a good man despite my fractured childhood. It maybe (though I admit its doubtful) that this is what she needs to wake up.

2 Gee, Jane, what is it going to take for you to admit that this woman is an absolute danger to these kids? Does she have to shoot stab, disembowel, or otherwise do them grave/fatal bodily harm? Or will you merely be satisfied when she jumps a private jet for some far-off land with no extradition treaty, taking the kids with her in order to deny Kevin any custody of visitation rights awarded by the courts? I don't make any of the claims that you attribute to me -- I merely point out that this woman is a positive menace to herself and others. She should not have access to these kids until such time as that is not true. And as for my having confronted such issues, several years of experience working with homeless populations and on time on the staff of a mental health crisis team give me a great deal of compassion for the mentally ill and those with substance abuse problems. Add to that my years of teaching in a community with high poverty rates and all the social ills that are associated with such a community and you can perhaps understand why my experience tells me that sometimes the best place for a child is not with their parents, and the best option for parents is separation from their children until they can deal with their issues. That isn't harsh and heartless -- that is simply a cold-hard reality.
