More Bad News For Cut-And-Run Crowd

We may be on the verge of defeating one of our major foes in Iraq -- the local al-Qaeda affiliate.

The U.S. military believes it has dealt devastating and perhaps irreversible blows to al-Qaeda in Iraq in recent months, leading some generals to advocate a declaration of victory over the group, which the Bush administration has long described as the most lethal U.S. adversary in Iraq.

But as the White House and its military commanders plan the next phase of the war, other officials have cautioned against taking what they see as a premature step that could create strategic and political difficulties for the United States. Such a declaration could fuel criticism that the Iraq conflict has become a civil war in which U.S. combat forces should not be involved. At the same time, the intelligence community, and some in the military itself, worry about underestimating an enemy that has shown great resilience in the past.

I'd rather not see a premature declaration of victory -- after all, there are other foes to be defeated in Iraq. But it is good to know that one of the worst is in the process of being crushed -- and it provides some hope that the rest are in similarly dire straights.

1 Haven't we read this before? Hasn't victory always been 3 or 6 months away, for the past 4 years? Indeed, haven't we already had "Mission Accomplished"? I know, I know, you can explain all this away and distinguish last month's almost victory from next month's almost victory but, sorry, I'm not buying it anymore, and neither is the American public. Let's compare predictions. You say that in 4 weeks, AQI will be out of operation. I say that in 4 weeks, a car bomb will go off and blow up a bunch of Iraqi civilians and a few American soldiers, thousands of miles from their homes and families. Which prediction do you think will come true?

2 Gee, Dan, I miss where I have said any such thing. I believe your entire comment falls into the category of "straw man" -- a technique used by the intellectually weak who lack facts or evidence on their side.

3 You're kind of right - you didn't have enough confidence in your position to offer any such prediction. We both know that the AQI is thriving under Bush's incompetent policy, don't we.

4 No, we don't know that, Dan. Quit being dishonest by attributing to me a position I don't hold. Oh, wait -- as a liberal, you are incapable of honesty.

5 Why doesn't the cut and run crowd want to leave Afghanistan?
