Proud To Be Americans

I admire these young people, both for their faith and their patriotism. I've got a number of students who are at World Youth Day (along with one of my colleagues, who runs her parish youth group), and I hope they are following this example.

After nearly a week of being very low-key about their nationality, a group of young Catholics from the South Hills began flying the stars and stripes yesterday.

While Pope Benedict XVI visited a synagogue in a city flooded with pilgrims who have come to see him, the teens and young adults from St. Bernard in Mt. Lebanon and Our Lady of Grace in Scott visited churches. They also acquired a large American flag to march behind today as they hike to the field where they will camp overnight before Benedict celebrates Mass there tomorrow.

All pilgrims from the United States had been warned not to display their flag because it might make them targets of political hatred. Many carried state flags -- the bear of California was everywhere. The South Hills group had carried a Steelers pennant to help them find each other in crowds where they could easily become separated.

But all week they had seen thousands of people from lands as diverse as Tahiti and Sweden proudly displaying their national colors. They had spotted a few American groups also flying large flags, with no apparent ill effects.

In a gift shop that carried flags from many nations, chaperone Zack Rosser, 22, purchased a large flag on a long pole to carry before them. And Lauren Witter, 17, of Dormont, bought an even larger flag that she literally wrapped herself in.

Youth group leader Jessica Fabus, 22, decided to accept the flag because they needed a larger banner as a sign to follow in today's hike. And she had also decided they were not ashamed to be American.

"We realized that the world problems don't matter here. We're all here because of what we have in common. You should show your colors and be happy to meet everyone, no matter where they're from," she said.

May God bless all those at this years event -- especially thoses from my school. May they be proud of their faith, and of the land of their birth.

1 No comment where Pope requested that the United States Government would not arrest him for hiding the information regarding the pedophile activities?

How typical of you!

2 1) As head of state, his diplomatic immunity is automatic.

2) Most of what went on was not pedophilia (look at DSM IV -- "Pedophilia" and "ephebophilia") -- it was homosexual activity by adult homosexuals with teen homosexuals. If you really want such conduct criminalized and enforced, I suspect that our prisons will be bulging at the seams with homosexuals.

3) I've written in the past about the scandal -- I simply don't feel like rehashing it. Having lived through the scandal when it broke in my diocese back during my seminary days, I would prefer not to have to relive a time when I woke up on a regular basis to find that men I thought I knew were accused of crimes that disgust and horrify me.

3 It is homosexuals? Please get a clue.

4 What do you call a guy who is sexually attracted to and active with post-pubescent males? A homosexual.

And since the reality is that most priests caught up in this mess have been accused by post-pubescent boys...

5 That is the problem you have -- I knew of a pedophile whom I worked as a case manager. He is married to a female -- he said he does *not* like men nor boys that has pubic hair. He prefers tiny boys -- which means what? He's not gay. He is just pedophile -- don't try to twist things as you'd like it to be.

I work with lots of mental ill folks and I know what i"m talking about. U re just a teacher who thinks you're all that in Texas -- trust me, you do not.

6 Now believe it or not, Ridor, you and I are actually on the same side here.

I'll agree that the fellow you describe is a pedophile -- my previous experience working in the mental health field would lead me to exactly the same conclusion you reach.

On the other hand, I'm pointing out that many of thepriest cases involve men who do not fall into the pedophile category at all, but who are instead men attracted to post-pubescent males.

I unfortunately had a front-row seat on the scandal that broke in my diocese when I was in the seminary -- I was doing my pastoral internship, and watched as no less than three of the neighboring pastors were removed as part of the initial dozen that the bishop pulled -- and know that 2/3 of the cases in the diocese involved young men age 15 or older. The remaining 1/3 split evenly between post-pubescent females and pre-pubescent males.

So I repeat -- based upon my experience, a lot of the scandal has really not been over pedophilia, but over acting-out by adult homosexuals

7 Of course, however..

pedophile - n : an adult who is sexually attracted to children [syn: paedophile].

But RWR is making a specific correction here regarding post-pubescent teens. I agree.

8 I'm curious, Ridor.

If these were not priests involved with these 15-17 year old boys, wouldn't a relationship between young men of such an age and an older man be seen as just hunky-dory?

My understanding is that such things are accepted, but I am willing to accept correction if I am wrong.
