Ray Nagin Says God Caused Hurricanes, Wants New Orleans To Be "Chocolate" City

Could you imagine the outrage if a white politician made this statement?

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin said as he and other city leaders commemorated Martin Luther King Day. "Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."

Or what about this comment?

"We ask black people ... It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans — the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," Nagin said Monday. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."

God wants a "chocolate New Orleans"?

But those comments don't come from the right, religious or otherwise. They come from the incompetent Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans.

Where is the liberal outrage?

Naw -- I didn't really think we would hear any.

After all, Nagin is a black Democrat. That will earn him a pass.

UPDATE: Looks like Ray is channeling Dr. King as well.

Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil rights leader.

"I said, 'What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and make it a reality?' He said, 'I don't think that we need to pay attention any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said, 'The thing we need to focus on as a community -- black folks I'm talking about -- is ourselves.' "

Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"

The reply, Nagin said, was "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are "most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many."

1 "Could you imagine the outrage if a white politician made this statement?"

Yes I can. Pat Robertson has made similar statements and, although he's not a politician per se, the MSM, liberals, and even conservatives jumped all over him for it.

Of course, Nagin "mitigated" his comment by saying that God is mad at us for "being in Irag under false premises."

2 Ray Nagin is a moron. I felt sorry for him during the hurricanes but he basically showed everybody how ridiculous he is. A chocolate city? God caused the hurricanes to kill those too poor to flee the city? I can't believe the idiocy of that guy...it's on par with Bush.

3 I never felt sorry for Ray Nagin -- he demonstrated his incompetence repeatedly. I hada hard time even feeling sorry for the people of New Orleans -- after all, they elected the idiot.

And let's remember that Bush graduated Yale with a higher average than John Kerry -- and has a Harvard MBA. That alone proves he is no idiot. What are your credentials, jackass?

4 For the record, white politicians do make statements like this. Senator Hank Erwin said, "New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness. It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgment of God."

As a progressive New Orleans resident, I am as outraged by Mayor Nagin's comments as I was by Senator Erwin's. I voted for Nagin because he was an outsider in the corrupt New Orleans political scene. With this kind of language, however, he will lose my vote in his bid for re-election.

I actually agree with his stance on the war and the need to curb violence in the black community. Unfortunately, Mayor Nagin's comments only serve to divide our city in it's gravest hour.

5 Interesting I didn't know God really had a particular opinion on the ethnicity of New Orleans.

6 Actually, I think I'm offended with your comments, "Where is Liberal outrage?", you were so quick to accuse many of us for not saying anything about it. In fact, I read many Liberals who found Nagin's comments to be inane, offensive and stupid.

Even for me, I regarded his comments offensive and pathetic.

And oh by the way, I'm Liberal and you knew it.

And yet you still say that we do not demonstrate any kind of outrage? Please.

9 I just want to hear the response from the mayor of Hershey, PA:

Um... If you're going to be chocolate, then we're going to have a Mardi Gras celebration, dammit!

10 He said what everyone else has thought before. I'm from New Orleans, trust me- I'm white and have faced tons of racial comments thrown at me as far back as I can remember. What more now??could make me feel anymore unwelcome in the city I was raised in. Why don't they just take me out back and shoot me?
