Mr. President, the filibuster is a critical tool in keeping the majority in check.
Harry Reid on filibusters -- 2007.
After the results were tallied, Reid asked GOP leaders to accept simple-majority votes. When they refused, Reid announced that the debate would be suspended, possibly until after Labor Day or until Republicans dropped their filibuster. He called the 60-vote requirement "a new math that was developed by the Republicans to protect the president."
Gee, harry, what happened? I thought that the filibuster was an important tool for the minority to keep the majority in check. Did you really mean that it was an important tool for Democrats to obstruct Republican proposals, but is illegitimate when used by Republicans?
Sit down, shut up, and go back to counting your dirty money from insider real estate deals.

Of course, I could quote Republican senators from last year and make them look equally as hypocritical.
Reid isn't now saying that filibusters are never justified. If he believed that he would threaten the "nuclear option", as the GOP did last year.
The difference is the GOP are now requiring 60 votes on nearly EVERY piece of legislation.
Only a fool such as yourself could deny that the GOP has taken filibustering to whole new level this year.

Interestingly enough, last year's debate was over the issue of allowing the Senate to exercise its constitutionally mandated obligation to give advice and consent on judicial nominees -- not the filibuster overall.
This year, however, the Senate majority Leader seems to argue that there is something wrong with the minority EVER using it -- after all, look at his comments on teh filibuster over immigration.
