A recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology has found an exciting link between exercise and the risk of a specific type of vision loss: wet age related macular degeneration.
Millions of people suffer from age related macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD occurs as a result of weak blood vessels in the eye that eventually break and begin to bleed. The two most common types of age related macular degeneration are dry AMD and exudative, or wet AMD. Although only 10% of AMD sufferers are diagnosed with wet AMD, the effects are swift and permanent, and sufferers can experience complete blindness in as little as a month.
Researchers studied about 4, 000 people in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin over a span of fifteen years. The participants ranged in age from 43 to 86 and were asked several questions, like "On average, how many flights of stairs do you climb each day?", "On average, how many city blocks do you walk each day?", and "At least once a week, do you engage in a regular activity long enough to work up a sweat?" 25% of the participants said that they engaged in physical activity several times a week.
"After controlling for age and additionally for other factors, both an active versus sedentary lifestyle and an increasing categories of blocks walked were associated with a reduction in the incidence of exudative AMD," says M.D. Knudston, one of the researchers and author of "Physical activity and the 15-year cumulative incidence of age-related macular degeneration: the Beaver Dam Eye Study" in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
The researchers recommend physical activity like walking several times a week and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Like cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation occurs as a result of wet AMD. Exercise has been shown to reduce this inflammation, thereby lessening the possibility of contracting wet AMD.
"Engaging in an active lifestyle or walking more, independent of confounders, reduced the risk of developing exudative AMD over 15 years by 70% and 30% respectively," finds Knudston.
