On The Atheist Sign In Washington State

As disgusting and hateful as I find the sentiments expressed, I rejoice that we live in a country where these religious bigots can freely trumpet their message of hate for all to see.

An atheist group has unveiled an anti-religion placard in the state Capitol, joining a Christian Nativity scene and “holiday” tree on display during December.

The atheists' sign was installed yesterday by Washington members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national group based in Madison, Wis.

With a nod to the winter solstice — the year's shortest day, occurring on Dec. 21 this year — the placard reads, in part, "There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

Mind you, this is from an organization whose leader claims that a Nativity scene is “hate speech” and openly boasts that his sign is intended as an attack on religion.

I trust that, in a similar spirit of tolerance, the state of Washington (and the state of Wisconsin, where a similar plaque has appeared for over a decade), will abide by the same principle and solicit a similarly contemptuous point of view from the KKK for display along with material honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. in January.

1 I urge everyone who finds this incredibly insulting and outrageous to donate a contribution to whoever runs against Governor Chris Gregoire. I live in New Jersey and I will actively donate to ANYONE other than the governor. I implore you to do the same. -Michael Smith

2 why is this sign hate, and the opinion of christianity that atheists deserve to go to hell not? come on.. they are actually pointing out a pretty decent argument.. religion causes most wars and stifles innovation..

3 Gov. Gregoire still has the chance to do what is write. This sign, as written, is HATE SPEECH against Christians, and the drafters should be prosecuted under Federal Law under HATE SPEECH statutes. The atheist crossed the line when they attacked, in writing, the Christian Faith. I pray for the atheist, that they repent and accept JESUS CHRIST as their Savior and Lord. Only then, will they enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The Bible is the best selling book EVER written, EVER,EVER!!!!!! Why do you think this is so, if it is invalid? Don't be stupid. Believe in Jesus Christ the Lord, and He will save you from yourselves.

6 This is an expected response from the "Religous Right". If they can't understand or tolerate something, they instantly demand that it is banned or otherwise deemed unfit for display. I can't imagine living with such a narrow view of this beautiful world we inhabit. Either way they'll claim persecution if their will isn't followed to the letter on this. Their will becomes God's will (conveniently enough) and they can justify almost any ridiculous accersion. It's safe to say that they have created God in their own image when God hates all the same things they do.

7 Odd -- an anonymous coward comes here spouting profanity based upon a couple of comments, failing to take notice of what I (the site owner) actually wrote, namely that "I rejoice that we live in a country where these religious bigots (the atheist group) can freely trumpet their message of hate for all to see." It might be nice if he would respond to what I wrote. Similarly I've got another clown (Heinrich) who goes on about how we want the speech banned. Please notice that I don't -- though I am more than willing to criticize it as being an example of hate equivalent to the messages of the KKK.

9 I have a few comments for those that think this sign is hate speech, needs to be removed, that christianity is under attack, or that christmas is about jesus. First, we have a thing in this country called the first amendment. It allows FREEDOM OF SPEECH, and FREEDOM OF RELIGION among other things. Freedom of religion implies freedom FROM religion. If there is going to be allowed a nativity scene in a PUBLIC place, then atheists, Witches, muslims, jews, Buddhists, and EVERY other religious or non-religious group should likewise be allowed. Get over it. You that are complaining and calling for the removal of this plaque are the very same ones that cried foul when the ten commandments were removed from the courthouse. You are HYPOCRITES. What you really want is to force christianity into this government and upon everyone. (You know, since you want a religious government, move to Iran. It has obviously worked for them). In actuality, NO such displays should be allowed on PUBLIC, government places. Also, there is NOTHING in the plaque that singles out christians. Yet you are the only ones complaining. As for christianity being under attack. Get over yourselves. christianity is not under attack. All one has to do is drive around any city in this country and see. There are churches to the christian "god" on every corner, sunday morning TV has hundreds of christian programs broadcast, almost every hotel in this country has a bible in every room, and the list goes on. christmas has NOTHING to do with christ. It is and always has been a Pagan Holy day. christians stole the day and have tried to subvert it. biblically speaking christ was not born anywhere near this time of year. If anyone should be upset it is the Pagans, because christians have tried to change this Holy Day into something it is NOT. I as a Witch should be upset because there is a nativity up. However, I am secure in my beliefs and am not a hypocrite. If you want to have a nativity, whatever. Likewise, the atheists should be able to have their display. You christians need to accept that not everyone is as myopic as you, not all bow down to your idea of god, and there are many that do not believe in any god. Get over it.

10 RwR, the unusual number and nature of comments are the result of David's remark being published on the Fundies Say The Darndest Things web site.
