Murth And Lincoln And Schmidt

Was John Murtha, once long ago, a hero? Perhaps, but I donÂ’t care

Really, I donÂ’t.

I don’t care if he has this medal or that award – or even if he single-handedly thwarted an alien invasion from the Planet Zarg. None of it matters – and all of it is irrelevant.

It isn't relevant to the debate.

Not after he has denigrated the service of our men and women fighting today, and indicated that they have been beaten by a rag-tag band of terrorists.

Rep. John P. Murtha is continuing his assault on the Bush administration's Iraq war policy, asserting this week that the U.S. Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth."

The Pentagon and a senior Republican senator sharply disagreed with his assessment.

Speaking to civic leaders Wednesday in Latrobe, Pa., in his home district, Mr. Murtha also said the Pennsylvania National Guard is stretched so thin that it will take a year before it can send fully equipped units overseas again.

"You cannot win this thing militarily," Mr. Murtha said later at a press conference. "Most of [U.S. troops] will be out of there in a year if I have my way."

The Murtha plan is now perfectly clear – “We’ve lost – cut-and-run, boys!”

Might I offer a few words from a leader from our past -- one Abraham Lincoln?

"Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs who should be arrested, exiled or hanged."

I’ll reserve judgment as to which is the best way of dealing with Congressman Murtha, or whether such a course of action is advisable. But I will say this much – his statements certainly render void any political coverage to which his past service may have entitled him.

ANd let me add that I've read and heard the words of Jean Schmidt.

She did not call the man a coward.

But she should have.

And I do.

1 Spoken like the true chickenshit-chickenhawk, Murtha has done more for the service of this nation by being willing to disagree with lil'boots and his PNAC enablers than you ever will. Typical cowards response on this topic.

2 Let's see -- who is the coward here?

Me, who maintains a public site and gives real contact information when stating my opinion? Or you, posting under a series of profane (now editted) handles and giving fake contact information while posting from a public library in New Jersey?

I'm curious -- are you using a public terminal because you lack internet access from home or because you want to hide your identity by not posting from home -- or because you are posting comments while you are on the clock at your taxpayer-funded job?

3 As I have seen stated elsewhere: "You posting from Iraq?? If not STFU, Simpleton"

4 No, I'm posting from the United States of America, where I hold the highest and most important of military ranks -- citizen.

As such, I am entitled to express my opinion on the conduct of the war as a part of my birthright, and view any who would seek to silence me or impose conditions upon the exercise of that right as an enemy of my homeland.

5 Murtha is clearly a traitor. Marine or not, disagreeing with President Bush should be instant grounds for a treason trial.

6 “Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale & undermine the military are saboteurs & should be arrested, exiled, or hanged.” - President Abraham Lincoln Lincoln never said this. Ever. This quote is a fabrication of Dr. J. Michael Waller, a long time Republican pundit, who first wrote it in a Moonie publication, Insight Magazine on December 23, 2003 shortly before the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth gave it life in 2004. I have two original King & Baird pamphlets in my collection, the identical pamphlet Waller sites as his proof, “TRUTH FROM AN HONEST MAN”. Lincoln never wrote anything like this … here, or anywhere else. How pathetic has the Republican Party become that it insults the reputation of America’s finest Republican president for their political gain? Cliff Hancuff The World of Journalism Is Flat, Too

7 Cliff -- I've seen that quote enough times over the last 20 years or so that I am inclined to doubt your claims. In the end, though, it is not particularly relelvant whether the quote itself is valid, for it certainly is in keeping with actions taken by Lincoln during the course of the Civil war, which included the exile of one Copperhead representative from Ohio -- with orders that he be arrested and tried on captial charges if he attempted to return to the US. If you would care to supply some better evidence regarding the quote, I would be pleased to look at it.
