US Deaths In Iraq Down -- Left Notably Silent

But then again, that might just be one more sign that the Surge is working, and they certainly couldn't let the American people start to believe that victory is possible.

US military losses in Iraq for September stood at 70 on Sunday, the lowest monthly figure since July last year, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures.

The figure also marks the fourth consecutive drop in the monthly death toll following a high of 121 in May. June saw 93 deaths, July 82 and August 79. The monthly toll in July 2006 was 53.

Two US soldiers were killed on Saturday in separate incidents, pushing the overall toll of American losses since the March 2003 invasion to 3,801.

A US military "surge" strategy saw an extra 28,500 US troops being deployed from mid-February, mainly in Baghdad and the neighbouring province of Anbar, although commanders said most were not in combat positions until May.

US commanders say the strategy is starting to work and that levels of violence are dropping, allowing for a possible drawdown of the 160,000 or so troops currently deployed across war-torn Iraq.

So let's make this clear --more troops in Iraq, fewer deaths. the Surge is working -- even though the Democrats don't want you to know that.

1 You seem smart enough to know the difference between coincidence and causation. Extending your flawed logic, if there were twice the number of troops there, would the surge be working twice as well? (As measured by your overly simplistic US casualty approach.)

A surge worked in Normandy. We won that war and came home. Iraq is not Normandy.

2 Yeah, you are right -- the Democrats supported victory in that war because they held the Oval Office. They oppose victory in this one because they hate the current Republican President.

On the other hand, the GOP supported (and supports) victory in both.

Why do the Democrats insist upon adhering to our enemies, giving them aid and comfort? For that matter, why do you, Bob, and the rest of your Libertarian friends?

3 And Bob, it isn't one's month's figures, if you read the story -- there is a consistent decline in the number of Americans killed. One month could be coincidence -- four straight months of declining death tolls constitutes a trend.

And when taken with the other news from Iraq, causation has been demonstrated.

4 One simple post and Greg stoops to challenging my patriotism, while coming no where near defending his flawed logic. It would be funny, but it's a worn out joke, just like the worn out tactic of saying, "If your not with us, you're against us."

How's that search for WMDs going, Greg? Any luck in finding valid CAUSATION for going in in the first place?

Didn't think so.

Ron Paul 2008. Hope for America.

5 Well, given that WMDs were not the only cause for the war, I have no problem with verifying the causation. And given that every intelligence agency believed that those weapons existed, it is hard to fault that motivation.

And given that you and your friends on the anti-American left are opposing the US and supporting our opponents, I'll continue to assert a lack of patriotism on your part.

And as for your support of Ron Paul, I'd have to argue that you are a few Froot Loops short of a full box.

6 Actually, Bob, I'm sorry. You are right -- I shouldn't question your patriotism.

You may actually believe that a military defeat in this war is in America's best interests. You may actually believe that the jihadi goal of ignorance and sharia law will be better for America than our current Constitutional system. By your lights, therefore, your position would be based upon love of country.

7 Your seemingly sarcastic pseudo apology aside, I don't question your patriotism. I believe you are sincere, and I respect that. But I don't confuse your emotional rationalizations with logic or patriotism. They are neither.

The U.S. (and others) invaded Iraq only after a number of causes, i.e. WMDs, were purposefully exaggerated. The only "patriotic" aspect of the blunder was the timely exploitation of 9/11 to gain support for it.

If you're idea of patriotism includes the assumption that government is infallible and does not admit mistakes, I submit that you may be confusing government with a god, or perhaps the Catholic church.

It was a mistake to invade Iraq, and it's a mistake to stay there. That's my logic, and you have yet to defeat it.

8 Before the U.S. House of Representatives, May 22, 2007

Madam Speaker, for some, patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. For others, it means dissent against a government's abuse of the people's rights.

...

But let it not be said that we did nothing. Let not those who love the power of the welfare/warfare state label the dissenters of authoritarianism as unpatriotic or uncaring. Patriotism is more closely linked to dissent than it is to conformity and a blind desire for safety and security. Understanding the magnificent rewards of a free society makes us unbashful in its promotion, fully realizing that maximum wealth is created and the greatest chance for peace comes from a society respectful of individual liberty.
