Advice For Dr. Laura: STFU!

I grew up in a military family during Vietnam. Dad was a Navy Officer, and was often away -- including multiple trips into the war zone. And I remember my mother doing her damnedest to raise two boys while dad was gone, with daily concerns about the possibility of my father being killed or wounded, and diminishing public support for the war and the warriors. I therefore feel quite qualified to tell Dr. Laura Schlesinger to SHUT THE F&$% UP!

Radio talk show host “Dr. Laura” Schlessinger is tired of all the complaints she hears from military wives who say they’re lonely and overwhelmed.

“You’re not dodging bullets, so I don’t want to hear any whining — that’s my message to them,” said Schlessinger on a visit to Utah.

Schlessinger broadcast her daily radio program on ethics, morals and values from the Fort Douglas theater here Friday. ItÂ’s one of several visits Schlessinger is making across country this year, publicists said.

Schlessinger boasted of once talking a young woman out of marrying a solider, saying “warriors need warrior wives,” and the girl was unprepared.

“It’s very unwise to be married young when you’re going to be alone — everybody has to grow up first to know who they are,” said the talk show host, whose first marriage ended in divorce.

I'm sorry, but this woman is simply wrong. There is nothing wrong with talking about the difficulties -- indeed, the failure to discuss them was part of why I knew so many neurotic, drunk or drugged military wives growing up. In fact, the military has recognized that reality and now offers more support services for families of those deployed.

Frankly, I've never understood why anyone listens to, much less calls, this woman for family advice when she could not even sustain her own relationship with her own mother. And for all her claims of patriotism, i don't think this attack does American soldiers and their families a bit of good.

1 I'm with you on this one Greg, I've always viewed Dr Laura as a waste of valuable conservative airtime. After Rush it's 3 hours of "you're pathetic". She's like a mean Oprah, ripping callers up with almost no background information, and they keep crawling back for more, like battered wives.

2 She's a pretty typical Bush conservative - claims to support the troops while heaping misery on them and their families. I'm sure she's supportive of the extended tours and the miserable treatment of wounded soldiers.

3 No, the bitch is hardly typical of any sort of conservative. Actually, she is much more typical of liberals in her desire to heap misery and scorn upon the troops and their families -- just as liberals did with those of us in military families during the Vietnam War period (hint -- it wasn't a conservative teacher who told me that my father was a war criminal for serving in Vietnam -- and it isn't conservatives doing so today).

Though I will offer this defense of her on one point where you try to slander her, Dan -- if you read the article, her son is deployed on one of those extended tours of duty.

I am dismayed at the ugly attack on me considering I have a son in the military, I raise exceptional amounts of funds for military family causes, I do military appearances gratis, etc.  It seems like common sense for military wives to not burden their husbands with their emotions - that only serves to demoralize him...and, as you know, that is dangerous at time of war.

The article misrepresented my intent.  Instead of shooting first, perhaps it would have been more fair and appropriate to ask for clarification.  Why so mean so fast?  Using vulgarities?

5 No, I think your words speak pretty well for themselves -- and speak pretty poorly for you.

As for my choice of language, it is indicative of my level of outrage at your disgusting comments -- comments that lowered you even further in my esteem than you were before, placing you somewhere around Cindy Sheehan level. If you look around my blog, you will see that such language is not my usual stock in trade here, and is reserved for very special incidents and individuals.

Sorry, Doc, I'm going to again state that your comments are incredibly destructive, and encourage a harmful cult of silence among military families that I know, from personal experience, is quite destructive and harmful to those families. And I say it this Mothers Day in honor of my mother, who lived the sort of silence you want to impose upon a new generation of military spouses.

6 Dr. Laura -

Don't worry too much about what RWR says here - a little while back, he thought it was funny to call the troops "losers" on this site.

7 You'll have to excuse Dan -- he operates in a "truth impaired" mode when confronted with the implications of his ideology and that of his party. He simply objects to my characterization of Harry Reid's statements about the state of the war in Iraq -- which I believe to be nothing short of calling the troops losers.

8 Hah - I'm "truth impaired?" You're the one who made up a quotation.

I agree, though, that I do object to your calling the troops losers, no matter what excuse you use.

9 Dan -- you admit that you know that the piece in question is a satire. You then insist on claiming that I am calling the troops losers when the context shows that I am doing precisely the opposite. That constitutes "truth impaired" in my book.
