Gabriel's Revelation

Biblical archaeology is one of those fields that has great opportunities for incredible discoveries. After all, a single artifact can potentially upset the applecart in a variety of fields -- history and theology being the two major areas.

That is why the discovery -- and subsequent study of -- Gabriel's Revelation is very exciting. It leaves room for a change in the understanding of Judaism at the time of Christ, not t mention revolutionizing our understanding of the origin of early Christian beliefs.

A three-foot-tall tablet with 87 lines of Hebrew that scholars believe dates from the decades just before the birth of Jesus is causing a quiet stir in biblical and archaeological circles, especially because it may speak of a messiah who will rise from the dead after three days.

If such a messianic description really is there, it will contribute to a developing re-evaluation of both popular and scholarly views of Jesus, since it suggests that the story of his death and resurrection was not unique but part of a recognized Jewish tradition at the time.

Here's the interesting part.

The slaying of Simon, or any case of the suffering messiah, is seen as a necessary step toward national salvation, he says, pointing to lines 19 through 21 of the tablet — “In three days you will know that evil will be defeated by justice” — and other lines that speak of blood and slaughter as pathways to justice.

To make his case about the importance of the stone, Mr. Knohl focuses especially on line 80, which begins clearly with the words “L’shloshet yamin,” meaning “in three days.” The next word of the line was deemed partially illegible by Ms. Yardeni and Mr. Elitzur, but Mr. Knohl, who is an expert on the language of the Bible and Talmud, says the word is “hayeh,” or “live” in the imperative. It has an unusual spelling, but it is one in keeping with the era.

Two more hard-to-read words come later, and Mr. Knohl said he believed that he had deciphered them as well, so that the line reads, “In three days you shall live, I, Gabriel, command you.”

To whom is the archangel speaking? The next line says “Sar hasarin,” or prince of princes. Since the Book of Daniel, one of the primary sources for the Gabriel text, speaks of Gabriel and of “a prince of princes,” Mr. Knohl contends that the stone’s writings are about the death of a leader of the Jews who will be resurrected in three days.

Now there are two ways of looking at this. One would argue that the ideas contained here constitute evidence that the supposedly unique views about Jesus' death and resurrection were really not so unique after all -- and in the eyes of some this means that we need to reassess the entire understanding of Jesus and the early Christian community. On the other hand, it could be just as easily argued that the Gabriel Revelation is yet one more foreshadowing -- this one extra-biblical -- that the death and resurrection of the Messiah was something foretold and expected by Jews of the period around the time of Jesus, and that said expectation was fulfilled by Jesus.

Frankly, I suspect that this discovery will be fodder for discussion for some time.

1 The information regarding the birth, death and resurrection of the Savior was known by most, if not all the prophets, from the time of Adam. Many of these very data specific prophecies can be found in the Book of Mormon.

2 It is highly probable this stone tablet text is yet another sensationalist scam, as is clearly indicated by the facts (1) that no specific information is available on its provenance and (2) that no details are provided on carbon dating of the ink. As such, this "news" falls right in line with the faked Lost-Tomb-of-Jesus "documentary" designed to make a profit off of people's fascination with the "real" Jesus, and with the larger scandal of the biased and misleading way the Dead Sea scrolls are being presented in museum exhibits around the world. See, e.g., http://spinozaslens.com/libet/articles/dworkin_ethicsofexhibition.htm and http://blog.news-record.com/staff/frontpew/archives/2008/06/dead_sea_scroll.shtml.

3 I agree that this will be an interesting story to keep our eyes on. It's exciting to get new information that may shed more light on what was happening around a very important time in history. With regard to whether this is a new "sensationalist scam", I guess we'll have to wait and see. So far from what I'm reading it sounds like the experts are pretty confident about the authenticity of the tablet.

4 I'm amazed about the claim that because there is a mention of a Savior/Messiah who would die and rise again in three days before Jesus' birth that this undermines the uniqueness of Jesus' death and ressurection. Any Christian who reads the whole Bible should know there are numerous prophecies in the O.T. which foretells a Messiah who would suffer and die and then be raised from the dead on the third day. Even the first disciples referred to these prophecies as substantiation which further strengthened their case instead of weakening it. If this questionable tablet is true, it only confirms that this expectation surrounding the Messiah was prevalent and known to the Jewish population. If they applied it to Simon, then they got the wrong man, because there are no eyewitness accounts of Simon reappearing after his death -- on the contrary there are plenty of Jesus being alive after His death. To T.F. Stern-- it is misleading to put the Book of Mormon alongside the Bible as a reliable source. We have scores of ancient manuscripts we can access which verify that the O.T. prophecies were indeed written before the events took place. However we don't have access to any ancient manuscript of the Book of Mormon, since it was conveniently whisked away by an angel. Therefore we cannot verify that it was written beforehand -- and there are many solid proofs that the Book of Mormon was indeed written 1800 years after the resurrection.

5 Having read the previous post regarding such things as "no details are provided on carbon dating of the ink", I can't resist commenting - Hey, for Pete sake... this is a STONE TABLET - DIDN'T YOU NOTICE??? Since when do people write on stone tablets with INK??? To me at least, it appears that we have here comments from someone who has his mind made up before even taking a careful look. Personally, I see nothing at all threatening about this discovery... in fact, I think it is just what we should expect if there is any truth to the story about Jesus. After all, the Bible (New Testament) makes it clear that His coming and the important events of his mission here were FORETOLD LONG BEFORE HIS COMING. This is why Herod was said to have attempted to pre-empt his mission (fearing his own displacement by such a King of Kings) by killing all the male Jewish children under 2 years of age. People's thinking is WAY TOO NARROWLY RESTRICTED - they can't seem to see the forest for the trees.
