Chronicle Columnist Proposes Arresting People For Speech

But only the ones who engage in speech that is "crazy".

It's probably more effective, though, to find and remove these potential killers — and try to deny them the most lethal hardware. That means we must detain them for their words and deny them guns.

As we see time and again, the right to bear arms and be crazy is a deadly combination.

And given the Left's willingness to classify opposition to certain political agenda's as a form of mental illness (ie "homophobia" -- the moral belief that there is something wrong with homosexual behavior, as was the clear and consistent Christian teaching ofevery Christian denomination until until only few years ago; or "Islamophobia" -- the opposition to jihadi terrorism), this is rather frightening. But then again, we've already seen where such detentions of the "mentally ill" because of their exercise of the right to freedom of speech -- it was a favorite tactic in the Soviet Union to crack down on dissent.

But given Cragg Hines' Froma Harrop's opposition to the Second Amendment, it isn't surprising to see him willing to abandon the First Amendment as well. She's just a little bit more honest about it than the average left-winger.

1 Careful, however, not to return to the wonderful experiment we ahd with deinstitutionalization. One of the things Rudy Giuliani did (that Ed Koch laid the arduous legal groundwork for) to clean up dysfunctional New York City was rigorously institutionalize the mentally ill and enforce laws against panhandling and the like, essentially returning 'loitering" to the criminal lexicon.

2 Hah - aren't you one of the people who labels anything less than total fealty to our idiot-in-chief "Bush Derangement Syndrome"? Hello, Mr. Kettle, allow me to introduce you to Mr. Pot . . .

3 No, I consider anyone with less than total fealty to idiot-in-chief Joe Biden to be sane and rational. As for the COMMANDER-in-chief, I don't support him in all things, so I am not guilty of your charge. For that matter, i don't urge that BDS sufferers be detained or interned, nor does anyone else I know.

For that matter, I am coming to see that the level of mouth-frothing vitriol some of you folks express is not the result of any sort of psychopathology -- it may well be that it is the standard Democrat Default position from 1864 and 1969 -- aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war.

4 Yeah, we should have stayed in 'Nam, right?

In your alternate reality, I'm sure we would have won in a month if only Nixon was a republican, right?

5 Actually, we would have won militarily were it not for the cut-and-run lobby back home giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

And that isn't my position -- that is the position of the commander of the North Vietnamese commander.

6 Umm, yeah, we were just about to win when the Republicans pulled us out. Go ahead and believe that if it gets you through the night.

So are you calling the veterans of Viet Nam losers, just like you called our troops in Iraq losers?

7 No, Dan, I'm not calling Vietnam vets losers (my dad is a Vietnam vet, asshole), nor am I calling the troops in Iraq losers. The folks I am calling losers are those who push for a policy of cut-and-run-and-surrender.

Indeed, we left South Vietnam safe and stable -- until the North violated the Paris Peace Accords and the Democrats in Congress refused to allow American forces to lend aid to an ally in need of support via a refusal to authorize funds to assist them.
