Senator John D. Rockefeller IV really betrayed the contempt with which he views our men and women in uniform. I don't think this apology really cuts it.

Senator John D. Rockefeller IV personally apologized to Senator John McCain of Arizona on Tuesday after remarking in an interview that Mr. McCainÂ’s years as a Navy fighter pilot would not have given him an understanding of everyday issues faced by Americans.

In an interview in his home state, West Virginia, on Monday, Mr. Rockefeller, a Democrat, told The Charleston Gazette that Mr. McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, could not relate to the everyday concerns of people on issues like health care.

According to the article, Mr. Rockefeller said: “McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues.”

Could you imagine the outrage if McCain were a Democrat and a GOP senator had made such a comment? Why the relatively low-key response from the Dems and the press. After all, when John Kerry's own fellow officers -- men who served with him in the same unit at the same time -- questioned the nature of his service and his fitness for office (based in large part on his anti-American actions after returning home), it was condemned by the Democrats and their media surrogates. When will they do the same in this instance -- not simply take the approach of Barack Obama and issue a milquetoast statement saying "I disagree with Senator Rockefeller"?

Probably never -- it would require them to have some integrity, and some actual respect for our military.
