Something To Give Thanks About -- Part III

I've wanted to say something that may be a bit controversial ever since I turned the news on yesterday afternoon and saw the horrors taking place in India.

This day we should all offer thanks to and for President George W. Bush and the policies and procedures put in place since 9/11 which have prevented this nation from suffering a major terrorist attack on our soil over the last 7 years. For all the snide comments about terror alert color codes, claims that information about threats has been leaked for political purposes, and abuse heaped upon Bush and his subordinates over Gitmo, interrogation techniques, and other issues related to the War on Terror, we have seen nothing like Mumbai or Bali, Madrid or London. We Americans do not find ourselves living like the Israelis live, on a constant state of heightened alert with acts of terrorism committed daily in our midst. And while some -- perhaps many -- might not like to admit it, this has been in large part due to the policies and practices put in place by this administration.

I don't care if you never voted for George W. Bush, nor do I care if you voted for Obama rather than McCain three weeks ago -- have the integrity to acknowledge the judgment that history will ultimately make about the forty-third president of the United States, namely that he kept this nation safe from its enemies at the cost of his own popularity and reputation by making hard and unpopular decisions. That, my friends, is statesmanship.

2 This was very well written. I voted for Bush twice and while I am not sorry for doing so primarily because of the reasons you state, I have to say that I have been very disappointed that he and his administration did such a very poor job of explaining or defending their positions/actions at almost every turn. Not adequately defending yourself leaves you wide open to criticism. As you say, Pres Bush's popularity and reputation have suffered greatly, but I think way more than necessary had he only been able to communicate better. Still, I agree that we should be thankful we have not had attacks on our soil since 9/11 and I am proud to say that I have made contributions towards that end by being a defense contractor.

3 To Web User, You said, "Ask any expert if our ports are really safer now." I know something about it and I say that yes, they certainly are. That doesn't mean they are impervious, but we certainly do have the intelligence and technology to "sniff" things out in the ports and more importantly, before a threat makes it as far as a port because then it may be too late. I think that people who are so critical as you are looking at the whole situation from one side only, and that's the Bush-critical side. People of that persuasion are not willing to give any recognition of our safety as U.S. citizens, compared to what much of the rest of the world is experiencing and suffering.

4 To Web User, You maintain our ports are not any safer, but not since when or compared to what. As somebody involved in port security, I will tell you that they absolutely are safer than they have ever been. We are not impervious because that is such an overwhelming task, but we are making progress. We do have the intelligence to identify and track and the technology to detect potential threats in some cases before they even leave a foreign port. That is very important, because finding something after it is already in Long Beach Harbor, can be too late. You can find "experts" everywhere, especially on websites, so I don't put much credence in your sources about our ports. I think the objective proof is in the fact that we have not suffered the terroristic things that have happened in so much of the rest of the world. It is not because nobody wants to cause us harm; it's because we have blocked them in dozens of cases.

5 I love liberals like Web User, who would ordinarily hold in disdain those who believe in Jesus Christ (much less know God's will or position on an issue), have the audacity to come out and tell us what Jesus believes about a group of people that liberals disagree with. Just mark him down as a hypocrite with BDS.

6 Excellent. The truth is Bush has been a disappointment in many ways, but on September 11, 2001 he began taking steps that were not popular with many, but have kept us safe (with a little luck and many qualified and committed people). I give him credit for that. This event in India was an attack on the West, Jews, Christians, and India.
